Our involvement was inspired by the work of the late José Therese to provide musical training for youngsters in Roche Bois and other areas, and to help them avoid the dangers to which those in deprived areas are exposed. This has been one of the Club’s most important (and expensive) projects, involving in particular the construction and equipment of more adequate premises. The project was initiated in 2010. A very important aspect of the project has been the Club’s longterm commitment, with two Rotarians chairing / sitting on the Board, not least to assure the many generous sponsors that their funding is well spent. For years the Jazz school was run in Jose’s Mother’s house, presently RCPL is renting a house in Batterie Cassee for the school.
Students are prepared for the Royal School of Music exams and the Band regularly appears in Mauritius. It has been further bolstered by invitations to participate in International Jazz Festivals in Italy, Cuba and Japan. A few students have also been awarded scholarships to study at the famous Berklee College of Music in Boston.
Funds to the tune of Rs4.5 million have so far been collected and donated but further support is more than welcome so that the Club can continue its involvement.
